Students will undertake courses which involve examinations, both external and as preparation (mocks) for their final exams in Year 13. These dates will be added to our calendar as we plan and receive external dates from examination boards.

A Level Courses

All courses feature examinations at the end of the 2 year course.

Both year groups will sit Pre-Public Examinations in winter; Year 12 will also sit summer examinations, which will be used as a basis for UCAS predictions and apprenticeship applications. Where students do not achieve their Year 12 target grades, resit exams will be arranged with intervention support in order to give students the best chance of raising their final Year 12 grade in preparation for their second year of study.

BTECs and Cambridge Technicals

All BTEC's and Cambridge Technicals now contain an examined element. These exams usually take place in both January and June depending upon the structure of each individual course.

BTEC Health and Social Care

Single or Double Award

Health and Social Care is an engaging and challenging course, designed to expose learners to the skills and knowledge required by healthcare and social work professionals in a variety of jobs and sectors. It is a subject which will appeal to students who:

Enjoy studying a subject which has practical vocational applications and is relevant to their lives, experiences and potential career aspirations.

Want an opportunity to investigate and research

Enjoy finding the answers and applying their knowledge - not just being taught it for an exam

The course requires you to have an interest in the Health and Social care sectors, an ability to communicate ideas effectively, an ability to organise yourself and your work to meet regular deadlines and an ability to work independently to research and investigate topics.

A Level Art and Design

This course is designed to build upon the skills, knowledge and understanding acquired by students taking GCSE Art and Design. Although it is not a pre-requisite to have undertaken GCSE to at least grade C level, we would expect candidates to have developed sufficient understanding and skill for their programme of study to be enjoyable and rewarding in its own right.

A Level Biology

The Biology course is designed to give students a real understanding of modern Biology. There is an emphasis on the value of biology in society and an awareness of advances in technology alongside an understanding of the inter-relationships of all parts of the living world including ourselves. There will be good opportunities to develop Key Skills.

A Level Business Studies

This course is structured into four themes and consists of three externally examined papers.

In Year 12 students are introduced to business in Themes 1 and 2 through building knowledge of core business concepts and applying them to business contexts to develop a broad understanding of how businesses work.

In Year 13 student develop breadth and depth of knowledge with applications to a wider range of contexts. This is developed in Themes 3 and 4, requiring students to take a more strategic view of business opportunities and issues.

A Level Chemisty

A level Chemistry is a two year course. The course covers the 3 main areas of Chemistry;

Physical Chemistry which covers the key areas of reaction rates, equilibria systems and acids and bases
Inorganic Chemistry which covers the periodic table, redox reactions and transition metals
Organic Chemistry which covers the chemistry of carbon compounds.

A Level Computer Science

Computer Science covers the technical aspects of computers, such as computer architecture, networking, database and programming as well as the theory of computation and the moral, ethical, legal and cultural issues surrounding the subject. It is an intensely creative subject that enables students to develop skills in analysis, problem solving, invention and innovation and investigates the relationships between the natural and digital worlds.

A Level Drama

A Level Drama and Theatre takes a contemporary approach to studying the subject. You will build on what you learnt at GCSE to develop key skills in performance and learn how to analyse and evaluate a range of theatrical texts. The course provider is OCR.

A Level English Language

Not just story writing, although there is a bit of that. You will explore how we judge peoples language, how the media uses language to persuade and mould, how and why language varies, as well as other topic areas that show you how language has the power to shape our lives. You will deepen your understanding of the way we learn language as children and why our language constantly changes. You will also be given the opportunity to work more independently on a research project.

A Level English Literature

English Literature is the study of a range of texts written in a variety of forms by a range of writers. You will explore what writers have to say about many themes such as war, love, death, and betrayal. In the study of literature you will develop the skills of close reading, analysis, independent thinking and the construction of a clear and decisive argument. You will read poetry, novels, plays and other texts written by writers from as far back as Chaucer to the most modern publications.

A Level Further Maths

Further Mathematics builds on the skills, knowledge and understanding set out in the whole GCSE subject content for mathematics and the subject content for the A-Level Mathematics qualifications. Assessments will be designed to reward students for demonstrating the ability to provide responses that draw together different areas of their knowledge, skills and understanding from across the full course of study for Mathematics. Problem solving, proof and mathematical modelling will be assessed in further mathematics in the context of the wider knowledge which students taking A level further mathematics will have studied.

A Level Geography

The new AQA A-level Geography brings together physical and human geography with a focus on key transferable skills that employers and Universities both value highly. It comprises 2 examinations, one in each geographical discipline plus a geographical investigation based upon fieldwork undertaken. This course will give students an excellent grounding in Geography for further study in this or related subjects.

A Level History

History is about your own opinion and using reliable evidence to support your argument. Have you ever considered that the majority of the history that you read and study has been written by the victors? Do you always believe everything you read? History is important as we learn how to evaluate and analyse the evidence effectively.

Furthermore, the information studied will open your eyes to the world that you live in and make you think about some of the most crucial events of the past 500 years. You will investigate British and European History in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, including the rise and consolidation of communism in Russia and also how and why the British Empire became the premier power in the world.

A Level Maths

The A Level course extends the algebra and trigonometry work covered at GCSE. More advanced mathematical techniques are developed in the Pure 1 and Pure 2 modules which can be used to solve quite difficult practical problems. Statistics and Mechanics will also be studied. The mathematics covered in the Statistics module can be used to represent and summarise data, and to calculate the probability of certain events happening. Mechanics looks at the mathematical side of Physics, Newton's Laws and Kinematics.

A Level Media Studies

The Media Studies A Level course involves in-depth study of such aspects of the media as film and broadcast fiction, documentary, electronic media and advertising and marketing. Students learn about the construction of identity of various groups and have plenty of opportunity to develop their creative skills. The course helps students to understand the importance of the media and its role in modern society.

A Level Photography

A creative photography course with an emphasis on experimentation and originality. You will learn to use your Digital SLR camera effectively over a range of genres including still-life, documentary, portraiture, landscape, experimental imagery.

A Level Physical Education

Advanced Level Physical Education builds on your experience from Key Stage 4 and GCSE to enhance your knowledge and increase your understanding of the factors that affect performance and participation in physical education. The qualification looks to equip you with skills and knowledge required for higher education or the world of work.

A Level Physics

The Physics course is designed to give students a real understanding of how Physics can relate to real world experiences. The course offers a great foundation for future study and focuses on the key areas associated with this. You can also expect a good balance between theory and the supporting mathematics. A Level Politcs

The Politics course offered at Brigshaw enables students to study the UK political system in depth, and also focuses on the ideological forces that shape political debate both in the UK and in the rest of the world. It covers a wide range of issues which are relevant to British Society today and in the future.

A Level Psychology

Psychology is a vast subject, but is usually defined as 'the science of mind and behaviour. You will be introduced to a wide variety of topics and look at many of the central debates in psychology. You will also look at the methods that psychologists use in their research, and you will have the opportunity to use these skills by carrying out practical investigations. A critical approach to the subject and the research studied will be encouraged. You will also be encouraged to apply psychology to a wide range of cultural, social and contemporary issues. There are rarely clear cut answers in psychology, so there will be lots of room for discussion and debate.

A Level Sociology

Sociology is a subject that you will be able to relate to. It’s relevant to your everyday lives and you will immediately engage with the subject. Studying Sociology encourages you to develop critical and reflective thinking skills, and a respect for social diversity.

OCR Cambridge Technical ICT

IT is one of the most popular vocational qualifications/subjects offered by Brigshaw High School. IT is at the heart of everyday life, at home, work and in our leisure time from computer graphics and control systems to communications and problem-solving, IT has an ever increasing role to play. For the duration of this course you will cover many different and interesting aspects of the IT industry – you will be required to undertake a range of tasks aimed at developing your knowledge of this industry as well as developing your practical skills and ability across a range of interesting and informative projects.

This course is designed for those who want to continue studying Sport at a higher level; it will open up a variety of opportunities for university study and work in the Sport and Leisure industry

Rock School Musis

You will build upon your knowledge gained from GCSE through a mainly practical approach. You will work on performance projects as well as develop your composing skills. You will look at roles within the music industry and gain an understanding of how to stage live events. There are a variety of units available that will be tailored by staff to suit the students on the course.

How will I learn?

By improving your rehearsal technique as a soloist and group member, by performing in an ensemble and as a soloist, by undertaking projects tailored to a music industry context, by using music technology to improve your composing skills, by taking part in practical workshops developing instrumental and vocal technique, trips – You will take part in open mic nights at local events, visit a recording studio, interview industry professionals from event management/promotion companies.

The end result will be a Level 3 qualification equivalent to 1 A level.
