Special Educational Needs and Disability (SEND)

At Brigshaw High School we are proud of our inclusive ethos and strive to promote all children to succeed in their education, become independent and resilient learners and support them in gaining the necessary social skills and life skills to be successful in their transition to adult life. Our SEND provision is driven by fostering our children’s understanding of being tolerant, respectful, keeping safe and, most importantly, imagining the possibilities without a ceiling being placed on their learning or aspirations.

We work closely with our children, families and a wide range of professionals so that we can ensure the best possible educational outcomes and continued good physical and mental health and wellbeing for our children. Early identification of children with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) enables early intervention to be implemented and extra support to be put in place in order to remove any barriers to learning.

Provision for pupils with Special Educational Needs (SEN)

We see our pupils as individuals with different interests, knowledge, skills and needs.  Brigshaw High School has a flexible, exciting, broad and balanced curriculum which aims to engage and challenge all children. This includes the National Curriculum in line with the Special Educational Needs Code of Practice. Staff use a range of strategies and resources to ensure classroom activities and tasks can be undertaken at different levels and in different ways to meet pupils' individual needs, providing a sense of achievement and high self-esteem.

Teachers are responsible and accountable for the progress and development of all the children in their class; high quality first teaching is our first step to support all children. Staff are advised by the SENDCo and Teaching and resources are adapted for individual pupils. Where appropriate, we provide additional intervention and provision and we aim to identify pupils requiring this type of provision at the earliest opportunity. Provision and pupil progress are reviewed regularly by staff, parents/carers and pupils.

Children with additional needs are encouraged to take part in every aspect of school life, including extra-curricular activities such as sports, educational visits, school concerts and productions.

School has an identified budget for SEND. Decisions about the notional SEN budget are made in consultation with the governing body and reflect a priority of need. For children identified with a high level of need, further applications for Top Up funding (FFI) are completed by the SENDCo.

Inclusion Team

All SEND provision in school is closely monitored, reviewed and evaluated by the Senior Leadership Team who report to the Local School Governing Body on how individual needs are being met.

The Inclusion Team comprises of Mrs E. Wood (Assistant Headteacher Inclusion & SENDCo), Ms S. Pearson (Assistant SENDCo), Mrs A. Steele (Care Needs Coordinator) and Mrs S. Barwick (Literacy intervention coordinator and specialist dyslexia tutor) and designated support staff with a wide range of specialist knowledge and training. The team liaise closely with teaching and support staff, parents and external agencies.

If you have concerns regarding your child’s progress or well-being at school these can be discussed with their class teacher, Form Tutor or Head of Year.  You may also wish to contact our Assistant Headteacher for Inclusion & SENDCo, Mrs E. Wood woode11@brigshawtrust.com should you require any more information regarding the services we provide. Arrangements will be made for a meeting should one be required, where school will listen carefully to concerns and put appropriate actions in place. This may involve referring to other professionals.

Accessibility

As a Resourced Provision for pupils with physical disabilities and complex medical needs our campus has full disabled access and a fully equipped Care Suite which has specialist resources and facilities to meet a range of needs. We support children with SEND to access their learning and school life in an inclusive mainstream environment, alongside their peers, whilst also being able to access additional resources to support their specific needs.  Incompliance with DDA requirements and our Trust and school policies, every reasonable effort will be made to accommodate the needs of disabled children, staff and visitors; we regularly review our Accessibility Plan and provision.

In addition to the support we provide in school we work in partnership with many different agencies and professionals. We strongly believe in the importance of early intervention and support, we work seamlessly with primary schools within the Brigshaw Learning Partnership and cluster feeder schools.

We work closely with Leeds Children’s Services and other agencies to ensure we meet the needs of all our children. The Leeds Local Offer provides more information about the services provided – add link to local offer.
